Steve Cowan
Commander - Sydney Battle Squadron

Steven is a model boater from wayback, building mainly British steam battleships in 1:144th scale. He was a natural for conversion to 1:144th scale model warship combat. Steven joined in early 2001 and set to work with his favorate material, medium density fiberboard (MDF), to build HMS Terrible, a late 19th century 'protected' cruiser to use as a fast transport. Launched at the 2001 June National Meeting, HMS Terrible proved that MDF, even when well sealed, does not like being hit with steel ball bearings at 50m/s and then sunk in 20 feet of water. Within 30 minutes of the start of the battle she was a wreck laying on the bottom of the dam, her seams having opened and never again will a ship's hull be built from MDF in this hobby.

Undaunted, Steven built two Liberty ships (SS Meg and SS Millie, named after his cats) for he and his daughter Katherine to sail and started work on HMS Revenge , a WWI British Dreadnought of the 'R' class. These ships all have fiberglass hulls.

With Richard Simpson , Steven set up the Sydney Battle Squadron and is now its Commanding Officer.
